Albright Holds Second Annual Biathlon Competition, "Splash and Dash"

Albright College held their second annual biathlon, "Splash and Dash" at the Schumo Center. Participants swam 300 yards and then ran a 5K. Competitors also had the option to only partake in the running part of the biathlon.

Many participants teamed up so that one person did the swimming portion while the other did the running part. This was the case for sophomore Connor Unger and junior George Cook. Unger is a member of the swim team and cross country team and Cook is a member of the cross country and track teams. Unger was last year’s male winner for the event. It’s safe to say the odds were in their favor for this team to do extremely well in the competition.

Participants started in the natatorium where they swam 300 yards (12 laps) in a snake-like manner. They swam up a lane, then back down the other side of the lane, where then they swam under the lane line to move to the next lane where they did they same thing. There were six lanes for the competitors to swim through.

Runners lined the cross walk waiting to start their 5K.

The running portion of the competition will start and end on Kelchner Field. The runners will face hills and roads as they run down Oak Lane and then back up Alsace Road before returning to Kelchner Field.

Many of the participants are involved in Greek Life on campus. The Splash and Dash was adopted to be a part of Greek Week. Sororities and Fraternities tried to include as many participants from their specific groups to help win points for their Sorority or Fraternity as a whole.

Sophomore Emily Weaver, whose partner is Junior Sarah Rowe, said, “We were encouraged to participate in splash and dash because the more teams the more points we earn per team.” Weaver and Rowe are members of Alpha Delta Pi along with Alyce Mancini and Stacey Norman another team for their sorority.

Junior Katy Oeste has been training for the biathlon for a couple of weeks now. Oeste is a member of the swim team and is hoping to win the competition for the students. Last year, Osete good friend Aimee Snyder was the female winner of the competition.

“I’m really excited to participate in the biathlon today. I have been working on the running section the most because I am already a swimmer; the 5k is going to be the hard part for me,” Oeste said.

“Dave and Joyce Ballaban were our staff/community members that won [last year]. The Ballaban’s are competing again this year,” said Alison Camlin, director of the Schumo Center.

There were two alumni participating in the event, swim team record holder for Albright, Carrie Miller, and the women's basketball coach Amanda Hanincik. Miller did the swimming portion and Hannick did the running portion. They finished first in their team alumni category.

Thank goodness it was a nice day following all this rain. Participants had no reason to worry about the weather not cooperating.
